You crave them for the buttery flavor and that fresh, salty crunch, but a “mispackaging” error associated with one iconic cracker brand that’s been loved for nearly 100 years, says its maker, could be a health risk for individuals with a high-risk food allergy.

On July 8, we reported about a significant recall effort involving Ritz Crackers—specifically, Ritz Sandwich Crackers products. At that time, Eastern grocery chain Wegmans was one of the first retailers alerting consumers about the potential issue.

Since then, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a notice further explaining the recall, which was initiated by Mondelez Global LLC, parent company to Ritz and other notable brands such as Chips Ahoy!, Honey Maid, and Oreo. All were former Nabisco brands acquired by Mondelez in 2012.

Now, the agency has provided a new update, which was made public today. In it, details indicate around 76,527 total cases of Ritz Sandwich Crackers are part of the recall marked as “ongoing.”

“Undeclared allergens (Peanut) due to mispackaging” is the official stated recall reason. As further explained in the FDA’s July 8 release:

“The affected cartons include individually wrapped packs that may be incorrectly labeled as Cheese variety even though the product may be a Peanut Butter variety. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product.”

Today, the recall has been assigned a Class II risk level. This means the FDA has determined the event to be “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.”

Following the initial announcement, several popular retailers have also released more details for their customers:

  • Walmart says the crackers were sold in “Walmart stores in all 50 states and Puerto Rico”, per its recall page
  • Kroger lists a number of states and stores impacted
  • Target alerted consumers that the affected crackers were sold at Target stores and on Target.com
  • Costco provided an online letter addressed to Costco members, dated July 10
  • CVS instructed customers on receiving a full refund

Though initial FDA reporting said the recall was nationwide, the latest update provides a more detailed account of which 47 states were reportedly part of the distribution pattern: Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Washington, D.C. is also listed.
